Effective immediately, SE Spezial-Electronic AG also distributes products made by American semiconductor manufacturer Discera Inc. Discera is one of the main vendors of so-called MEMS oscillators (MEMS: micro-electromechanical systems).

As an equivalent alternative to conventional oscillators on the basis of oscillating crystals, MEMS oscillators use highly stable, semiconductor-based resonators that are integrated together with the PLL circuit on a chip. MEMS oscillators thereby offer in particular advantages in reliability and resistance to shock and vibration. Their "size" in the micron range makes them particularly suitable for use in devices that are becoming smaller and smaller, such as mobile phones, cameras and MP3 players and even highly specialized military equipment.

Discera's PureSiliconTM product line encompasses oscillators from 1 MHz to 150 MHz with frequency stabilities of +-25ppm and +-50ppm. The working temperature range extends from -20°C to +70°C for the commercial sector or from -40°C to +85°C for industrial applications. They are offered with supply voltages of 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 2.8 V, 3.0 V and 3.3 V and are available with the following package dimensions: 7.0x5.0mm, 5.0x3.2mm, 3.2x2.5mm and 2.5x2.0mm.

By virtue of the compatible dimensions in comparison with standard quartz oscillator packages, they are useable as an alternative without changing the layout, only the lower installed height of max. 0.9 mm has to be taken into account.

The MEMS oscillators are available with a fixed frequency or as a programmable version. This permits production of small lots for prototypes and small batches even on short notice.
